Family Travel Guide: Our Trip to Eleuthera, Bahamas with Kids

We recently took our first trip to Eleuthera, Bahamas with our three kids, and it turned out to be the perfect way to dip their toes into international travel. If you’ve ever wondered whether Eleuthera is family-friendly, I can confidently say yes—it’s dreamy, a little adventurous, and the perfect balance of relaxation and fun.

Here’s everything we loved about our family vacation, from how we got there to where we stayed, what we ate, and the activities that made this trip unforgettable.

Getting to Eleuthera from Atlanta

One of the best things about Eleuthera is how easy it is to reach from Atlanta. We flew Delta Airlines to get to Eleuthera. The flight is less than two hours, which checked the first box on our “must-have” list for traveling with kids. We wanted this trip to feel relaxing (if that’s even possible with three kids!), so our requirements were simple: a short flight, a house close to the airport, and something on the water where we could slow down.

We booked a rental car right at the airport, and a quick note if you’re going—driving is on the left side of the road, and the lanes are narrow. It takes a little getting used to!

Where We Stayed in Current, Eleuthera

We found the perfect rental house in Current, about 25 minutes from the airport. It was quiet, secluded, and best of all—we had our own private beach. That really made it feel like paradise.

The owners of the home recommended a private chef (something we had never even considered), and that single choice completely changed our trip. More on that below.

Food & Our Private Chef Experience

Before our trip, I had read on travel forums that groceries in Eleuthera can be limited and expensive, so we packed a cooler of frozen food and a suitcase of snacks, pantry staples, coffee, and even diapers. (Of course, that was the one bag that didn’t arrive when we did. Thankfully, it showed up two days later, and we managed to find diapers at a tiny convenience store in the meantime!)

Because of my shellfish allergy and the distance from restaurants, bringing food was a lifesaver. But the real highlight was Vernessa, the private chef we hired. She quickly became a friend, and honestly, she’s the reason I actually felt like I was on vacation.

Every morning she cooked fresh fruit, eggs, pancakes or waffles, and bacon. For dinner, she prepared chicken for me and grilled up the fish that Troster and Charlie caught during the day. If I could give one tip for traveling to Eleuthera with kids, it would be this: hire a private chef if you can. It was such a gift.

We miss you Vernessa! She made this trip actually relaxing for me.
I miss these breakfasts!

Family Activities in Eleuthera

We had planned a few snorkeling trips before arriving, but the wind only allowed us to get out once. Still, that one day was such a highlight—we visited the famous swings in the ocean, did a little fishing (Charlie’s favorite!), and braved some snorkeling. The kids were less thrilled about the stingrays, but that’s a memory in itself.

Most mornings, Troster and Charlie would head out fishing while the girls played on the beach. Honestly, the kids would have been happy just staying at the house all week—snorkeling, exploring tide pools, and searching for shells.

We also discovered a few incredible sandbar beaches just minutes away, where we spent hours exploring.

Day Trip to Harbour Island

One of our favorite outings was a quick boat ride over to Harbour Island. We rented a golf cart and spent the day exploring the colorful houses, blooming bougainvillea, and the famous Pink Sands Beach. We happened to visit on Good Friday, so it was a little busy, but still magical.

If you love a more lively scene with shops, restaurants, and resorts at your fingertips, Harbour Island might be the better fit. But for us, the quieter vibe of Current was perfect.

Pineapple Farm & Glass Window Bridge

Because I can’t resist anything garden-related, we also stopped at a pineapple farm where the owner gave us a tour. The kids weren’t overly impressed—until he handed them fresh pineapple lemonade, which turned the whole visit around.

The farm was right along the way to the Glass Window Bridge, one of Eleuthera’s most famous sights, where the dark Atlantic meets the calm turquoise of the Caribbean. It was breathtaking and worth the stop.

Why Eleuthera is Perfect for Families

Eleuthera Island truly has something for everyone—private beaches, family-friendly adventures, colorful culture, and the chance to slow down. For us, it struck the right balance of adventure and rest, even with three kids in tow.

If you’re planning a trip to the Bahamas with kids, I’d put Eleuthera at the top of your list. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and filled with little surprises that make it unforgettable. We can’t wait to return and explore more Bahamian islands like Exuma, Abacos, or Andros.
