I woke up this morning and realized I ran out of coffee beans. I put on some sweats (it was actually chilly enough!) and went off to Perc. Since, I was already here for beans why not treat myself to some coffee and their yogurt bowl, write a little bit and plan out the week before a morning of church and errands.
Things have been nutty the last few weeks. I’m glad school is back and we have a routine again, but we’ve all been struggling getting used to it. I recently read this substack post from Shauna Niequist and “give it six weeks” is my new motto. This applies not just to school, but in any big life change. Even with keeping the kids to one activity; I still feel like we are going from place to place all the time. Maybe this is just life with multiple kids?
On another note, I’ve slowly been making some big changes over here when it comes to how I’m going to be showing up on Instagram. I’ve been thinking about this since Lucy was born on what do I want this space to look like and what’s my purpose of being on social media. When I started blogging, I had no idea what I was getting into. I was clueless about followers, the algorithm, partnerships and so many other things that come along with doing social media. I’ve just found it to be overall unhealthy for my mental health and just a time suck. I feel like I waste a lot of my creative time behind a screen rather than using it in real life.
Don’t get me wrong, some wonderful things have come out of it. I’ve got introduced to friends that I never would’ve met, had I not started blogging. I’ve also had some neat opportunities come my way and have gotten to work with some amazing companies. I do feel like through all of this that I’ve realized my love for gardening and how I can be creative in that way in real time. I’ve had the opportunity to do a few garden consultations over the last few months and that’s where I’m choosing to focus my energy on.
All of that to say, I’m done with being a creative/blogger on Instagram. I’m sure I’ll have a few partnerships here and there, but that will only be in stories if I decide to commit to one. Most of my grid will be gardening and occasionally some family things once or twice a week. I’m currently trying to figure that out. I wish I had the discipline to just post at a certain time or do stories only at xyz , but I never found a sweet spot for that. Instagram’s job is to keep you on the app for as long as they can, the more you post and share, the more your page gets seen… maybe!
I don’t understand why we’re talking about that it’s harmful for kids, but we are hardly talking about how harmful it is for adults? Kids are watching and learning from us. They see us on our phones, posting pictures, doing videos, of course they want to be on a phone too. Okay, end of my rant. My friend Amelia Styles wrote a post about this last year and it has stuck with me ever since.
I’ll still be doing a Sunday Happy newsletter with our meal plan and happenings, but that’s really it. I’ve thought about putting it on Substack, but I’m not sure if that’s just one more thing to do?
Speaking of meal plans, here’s our menu for this week. If you got this far, thanks for reading! – Ash
